چکیده

Recent reports" have shown that experi mental retinal detachment in the owl monkey (Aotes trivirgatus) produced photoreceptor outer-segment degeneration, and that surgi cal reattachment of the retina returned the outer segments to a normal configuration. The owl monkey is a nocturnal animal possessing a predominantly rod retina and an area centralis but no fovea. Because of the importance of cone vision in man, we felt it important to compare rod and cone fine-structure in experimental retinal detach ment and reattachment in the rhesus monkey which has an eye with a fovea, color vision and a retinal histology quite similar to that of man.

Differential expression of cone opsin mRNA levels following experimental retinal detachment and reattachment.

PURPOSE To identify changes in S- and M-sensitive cone opsin gene expression following retinal detachment (RD) and reattachment. METHODS Cat retinas were detached for 1, 3, 7, or 28 days, or reattached after 1 h, 1 day, or 3 days of RD and fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde. Pieces of mid-peripheral retina were removed from the same region of each detached, normal (attached), and reattached retina ...

Morphology of retinal photoreceptor layer in continuous light-exposed and dark-adapted male cats

The morphology of retinal photoreceptor layer was studied in continuous light-exposed and dark-adapteddomestic male cats (Felis catus). The eyes of 12 healthy adult cats (4 in continuous light-exposed group, 4 in continuous dark-adapted group, and 4 in control group) were routinely fixed and studied by electron microscope. Results showed that the general structure of photoreceptor layer in this...

A survey of molecular expression by photoreceptors after experimental retinal detachment.

PURPOSE To describe changes in the localization patterns and levels of rod and cone photoreceptor proteins after experimental retinal detachment (RD). METHODS Cat retinas were detached for 1, 3, 7, or 28 days, at which time the eyecups were placed in fixative for immunocytochemical analysis or homogenized for biochemistry. Immunocytochemistry was performed using 19 probes for molecules known ...

Distribution of photoreceptor subtypes in the retina of diurnal and nocturnal primates.

We have used antibodies specific to either the red/green-or blue-sensitive cones in order to compare their ratio and distributions to that of the rods in the retinae of 3 primate species that differ in their capacity for color vision. We have found that the monoclonal antibody CSA-1 (Johnson and Hageman, 1988) and the polyclonal antibody 4942A, specific to the red- and green-cone opsin (Lerea e...

The visual pigments of rods and cones in the rhesus monkey, Macaca mulatta.

1. New microspectrophotometric measurements have been made of the photo-pigments of individual rods and cones from the retina of the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta). The measuring beam was passed transversely through isolated outer segments. 2. The transverse absorbance for rods ranged from 0.02 to 0.04 and that for cones from 0.01 to 0.03. 3. The mean absorbance spectrum for rods (n = 25) had a...
